Maternal Smoking May Promote Eating Disorders In Children

Smoking during pregancy may predispose children to eating disorders.  A recent study shows that mothers who smoke tend to have cord blood with higher concentrations of the hormone leptin.

Leptin is a key hormone acting on the hypothalamus to control eating and food intake.

Recent discoveries in nutrition science have linked higher concentrations of leptin in the blood to a variety of eating disorders.

The study was conducted byThe London Center for Paediatric Endocrinology. The results of the study indicate that children born to mothers who smoke tend to be of smaller size and have impaired metabolsim of leptin.
