Nutrition Myths and Facts:

Fact or Fiction? There is so much information on nutrition all over the world and much of it is myths and much of it is facts. It is misunderstood and then we don’t get the right information that we need. Each meal needs to provide a balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

MYTH - Skipping Breakfast controls my appetite for the day

First and foremost, Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast can lead to late night eating which is the worst thing you could do if you are trying to drop calories and get lean. Your metabolism is the highest in the morning and slows downs throughout the day. Your body has been without vital nutrients for a period of six-eight hours or so and
this makes your breakfast crucial.
Your breakfast should consist of carbohydrates - (supplies fuel to the brain and replenishes muscle-glycogen levels) and protein - (supports muscle growth).

MYTH - Avoiding starch carbohydrates will help me lose fat.

This approach will make it difficult to consume the right amount of calories leaving you with mainly fruit and vegetables as your carbohydrate source. This will lead to lower blood sugar levels and a slower metabolism. In turn, low blood sugar levels will initiate the breakdown of muscle tissue and the result of losing muscle is a slower metabolism and gaining fat.

Great choices of starchy complex carbs are: whole-grain pastas, brown rice, oatmeal, and yams.

MYTH - All fat is bad fat.

Fact: You need fat to burn fat.
Your body must have certain types of fat that it can’t produce on it’s own such as essential fatty acids (EFAs) found in vegetable oils. EFAs are essential to support normal fat metabolism and are the building material for hormones. To support your immune function by sparing glutamine and improving glucose tolerance, you need some type of fat to include flaxseed oil, omega-3fatty acids and evening primrose oil.
