Sex Hormone Binding Globulin is a carrier hormone for Testosterone. Only testosterone that is unbound by SHBG is available to be taken into cells where it can exert anabolic effects.

A recent study from New England Research Institutes examines over 600 men over the age of 50 for signs of frailty such as weight loss, exhaustion, low physical activity, slowness and weakness.

The study showed a clear association between high levels of SBHG and signs of frailty.

This seems to make sense since high SBHG would leave less unbound or ‘free’ testosterone available for anabolic action. This study might suggest future treatments for age related physiological decline in men.
