A fascinating study from The Institute of Sports Medicine in Muenster, Germany recently examined low impact, non intense jogging with more intense high impact running and compared the two with people at rest to see if there is an immediate cognitive benefit to exercise.

28 individuals were measured on learning speed and immediate (1 week) and long term recall with new vocabulary words.  Key hormones involved in learning such as dopamine, epinephrine and norepinephrine were measure both prior and after exercise.

The group involved with intense high impact running showed 20 percent faster retention and also better intermediate and long term recall.

In line with the article we did last week on the hormonal affects of intense resistance training, this study reinforces the notion that intensity during exercise produces desirable hormonal results.
